Coke returns to court today

NEW YORK, USA – Accused Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke could find out today if his extremely slim chance of obtaining bail will materialise.

Coke, who was extradited here last Thursday on drug and weapons charges, will make his second appearance in a Manhattan courtroom at 4:00 pm, where a bail application is one of the items likely to be dealt with by the court.

The matter of Coke’s legal representative will also be settled. Russell Neufeld, his temporary court-appointed attorney, told the Observer on Friday that Coke’s family was in the process of hiring an attorney. Frank Doddato, who has since emerged as the likely head of a team of attorneys to defend Coke, conceded Friday that an application for bail “will likely be denied”.

Prosecutors will also begin to hand over material to the defence today, a process likely to last up to two months because of the volume, and because the case is an international one.

Judge Robert P Patterson, who is presiding over the case, is also expected to set a schedule for the remainder of the court’s proceedings. Yusill Scribner, a spokeswoman for the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, told the Observer here that matters such as legal motions, a possible trial date and discovery procedure, are also likely to be dealt with at today’s hearing.
