DALLAS—A Jordanian man sentenced to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to blow up a Dallas skyscraper is appealing the punishment.
Hosam Smadi faced up to 30 years as part of his plea bargain. He was convicted of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, a charge that without a plea bargain carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The 20-year-old Smadi acted as his own attorney in filing the appeal Thursday. The one-page document offers no details about his grounds.
Neither of his lawyers nor the U.S. attorney’s office immediately returned messages Friday. The FBI declined comment.
Smadi was arrested last year after leaving what he thought was a truck bomb in a garage beneath the 60-story building. He’d actually been provided a fake bomb in an FBI sting.
