Mandela death crash driver voices regret and asks for privacy

THE driver in the car crash that killed ex-South African president Nelson Mandela’s great granddaughter voiced regret at her death and asked that the family be left to grieve in private.

“I deeply regret the loss of our little Zeni,” Sizwe Mankanzana said in a statement issued through Mandela’s foundation.

“I ask that your thoughts and prayers be with her family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Thirteen-year-old Zenani Mandela was killed in a car that overturned in Johannesburg last Thursday as it took her home from a concert in Soweto on the eve of the World Cup’s opening ceremony.

Nelson Mandela had been due to attend the opener but he canceled after news of the death.

Police initially said that the driver was drunk but he has yet to be indicted on any charges.

The foundation said that Mankanzana was the son of the partner of Nelson Mandela’s oldest daughter, also called Zenani.
