People living in London, and reading the latest headline regarding the 5 individuals that has been treated for gun shot wounds, must be wondering if we are living in the O.K Carol.
It seems to me that you cannot listen to the news are read the paper and somewhere there is another gun incident. When did London become so inundated with guns? Where are all these guns coming from? More importantly how the hell are they getting into the hands of the criminal elements in our city.
I was astonished to find out that between 2003/04 more gun related crimes were recorded in London than any other part of England.
According to a BBC News report dated 16 October 2003, ‘the number of crimes involving firearms increased by just under 3% in the 12 months to March 2003 to 10,250’, although the report further state that, it was well below the 35% rise in the previous years, when gun crimes leapt from 7,362 firearms offences to 9,974, does not make this situation any more easier to tolerate.
although it has also reported that the ‘risk of fatal shooting in England is still one of the lowest in the world’ any kind of shooting among the public is still unacceptable to everyone.
Apart from the infamous shooting spree that has been undertaken by the likes of Michael Ryan and Derrick Bird, of which these are one off events and rarely happen, it seems that more and more young people are getting their hands on guns and they are not afraid to use them.
There was a time when dispute would have been settle verbally, however nowadays there seems to be that if a dispute arise or if someone one is ‘diss’ street talk, they go for gun.
These individuals do not seem to understand the devastation that they left when they take the life of some body’s child. It was the 1st January this year that some friends of mind lost one son and almost lost another to gun crime, all because people do not understand that there are other methods of dealing with a problem.
At the rate at which gun crimes are been committed one would believe that we are occupying some section of the wild west.
The authority got to be more vigilant if we are to stop gun crimes from escalating within the UK, we cannot afford to go down the way in which some US cities have gone. We must find a way to determine how these illegal guns are getting to these individuals who unfortunately are not afraid to use them.
