Fatal attack: football star’s mum ‘was in the way’

“THE bitch was in my way.” That was the alleged justification from a cyclist who fatally attacked the elderly mother of former footballer Joe Thomas in a suburban Sydney street.

Mary Touma, 71, was walking along the footpath on Gardeners Road in Eastlakes, in Sydney’s east, on Friday afternoon when she became involved in an argument with a passing cyclist.

Police believe the cyclist — described as a man in his 20s, riding a black mountain bike — stopped and pushed Mrs Touma violently in the chest, knocking her off balance.

She fell backwards, striking her head on a low brick wall. Mrs Touma died in hospital from her head injuries yesterday morning.

The first witness on the scene of the attack told the Ten Network that when the cyclist was asked what had happened, he replied: “The bitch was in my way”.

Police described the attack as “cowardly” and established Strike Force Cupro to investigate the incident.
