The mother and stepfather of a 10-year-old Tucson boy who fatally shot himself in the head are facing child abuse charges.

Genesia Elizabeth Lozano and Carlos Janesch Lozano were arraigned Friday in Pima County Superior Court on two felony child abuse charges. They pleaded not guilty and were released on their own recognizance.

The Lozanos and their 2-year-old daughter left Anthony J. Wells behind to do his homework while they went to pick up a pizza in January. While they were gone, police say the boy found his stepfather’s unloaded semiautomatic handgun, loaded it and then shot himself in the head.

Prosecutors say the Lozanos committed child abuse by leaving a child unsupervised in a home with a gun.
