AN American man has gone missing while swimming near Byron Bay, on the NSW far north coast.
Police say the 32-year-old man disappeared while swimming with two friends at Tallows beach, near Byron Bay, about 12.20pm (AEST) today.
His friends searched for the man before raising the alarm.
Council rangers joined them in a search of the beachfront followed by an expanded air and sea operation but emergency crews failed to find the man.
The search was called off on tonight and will resume tomorrow morning.
The incident follows the drownings of four Sydney people, and one other feared dead, who had gone rock fishing on the NSW Central Coast on Sunday.
Police have recovered the bodies of three men and a woman and do not expect to find alive a second woman from the group.
