Woman to be quizzed on flat deaths

Three primary school children, two boys and a girl, were found dead in a flat

Police have been waiting to question a woman in connection to the deaths of three primary school children in their home.

Officers want to speak to the woman, believed to be the children’s mother, after the bodies were found following an explosion in a flat in Slateford Road, Edinburgh.

They said the deaths of the two boys and a girl are being treated as suspicious and launched a criminal inquiry.

Emergency services were called to the flat at 3pm on Wednesday to reports of a gas explosion – but police later said there was no fault with the supply. A small fire was also extinguished by fire and rescue crews.

It was initially thought the children were killed in the explosion but police were unable to deny later reports that they had died before it happened.

The woman, believed to be the children’s mother, is being treated in Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary hospital.

Neighbours said she had apparently fallen from balcony of the modern terraced house. They said the family had recently moved to the flat and reported smelling gas in the hours leading up to the explosion.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the three children.

Police said the results would determine how the children died and help them decide whether to launch a murder inquiry.

The children’s father was traced in Aberdeen. He has been questioned by police but is not a suspect in the investigation.
