Soldier jailed over dog that killed nephew

A BRITISH soldier was jailed for four months today for owning an illegal breed of dog which mauled his four-year-old nephew to death.

John-Paul Massey was attacked in the kitchen of his grandmother’s home in Liverpool, northwest England, as he went to fetch some food.

Grandmother Helen Foulkes, who was babysitting the youngster while his parents enjoyed a night out, was also bitten as she tried to prize the youngster from the raging pit bull’s jaws.

Police eventually shot it dead in the family’s front yard.

John-Paul’s uncle Christian Foulkes, 22, admitted owning the pet dog named Uno last month. He also confessed to having a second outlawed animal, a pit bull bitch, named Lita.

Pit bulls are outlawed in the UK.

Foulkes was jailed for four months at Liverpool Magistrates Court overnight for three offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

He issued a note through the court warning others not to keep dangerous animals, Sky News reported.

“Do not make the same mistakes I have made,” it said.

Helen Foulkes has also been charged with keeping a dangerous dog and is due before magistrates on June 10.

Merseyside Police admitted in the wake of John-Paul’s death last November that they had failed to properly investigate allegations of illegal dog breeding at the house where he was killed.
