Mayor’s son shot and killed

BELIZE CITY, Belize — The son of Belmopan mayor Simeon Lopez was shot and killed last night in Belize City.

Lopez, 30, a high school teacher and prominent basketball player, was on Prince Street in Belize City around 11:00 pm local time when he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.

It is not known why Lopez was out on Prince Street at that time of the night and initial investigations by police have led to the detention of several young men for questioning in connection with his murder.

Police have also recovered a weapon, believed to have been the one that fired the fatal bullet.

When contacted this morning, Mayor Lopez was heading into a meeting with the police’s Criminal Investigations Branch head Sergeant Julio Valdez for a briefing.

Mayor Lopez said that he got a call around midnight from a relative, informing him that his son had been shot and killed.

The killing of the politician’s son comes less than 24 hours after the government of Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that “the crime situation in Belize has reached crisis proportions”.
