Ex-cop among 156 detainees

POLICE said they detained an ex-colleague among a group of 156 persons who have been taken into custody following the imposition of a curfew in sections of downtown Kingston, yesterday.

The cops said that they also seized an AK 47 rifle, and an M-16 assault rifle, a shotgun, several imitation firearms, and a quantity of assorted ammunition in the operation, which is slated to end tomorrow morning.

According to a police source, who was in the curfew area, the former lawman was detained after several police uniforms and a grenade were found at his house on Penn Street in downtown Kingston.

Additional searches were carried out on the man’s property, but no additional contraband was discovered, up to press time yesterday.

The detainees are being processed and interviewed by detectives.

The curfew is slated to run north, along Penn Street and Baker Street, south along Seventh Street, Asquith Street and Studley Park Road, east along Slipe Pen Road between Studley Park Road and Baker Street, and west along Collie Smith Drive between Seventh Street and Penn Street, using an imaginary line.

During the hours of the curfew all persons within the boundaries are required to remain within their premises unless otherwise authorised in writing by the member of the security forces who is in charge of enforcing the curfew, the police said.
