Coventry woman Sarah Hunter claimed rape to avoid car crash rap

A BRITISH woman has said she lied to police about being gang raped and wasted more than 15 hours of police time to avoid being punished for wrecking her boyfriend’s car.

Sarah Hunter, of Coventry, central England, ran to a nearby home claiming she was dragged from her boyfriend’s car by two men and raped in an alley, the Coventry Telegraph reported.

She repeated her claim to police, who spent hours in April performing fingertip searches of the area for evidence.

Magistrates heard that minutes before Hunter, 30, made the allegations, she crashed her boyfriend’s car into two parked vehicles, causing £5000 ($8850) damage.

She later said she lied about the rape because she took her boyfriend’s car without having insurance – and without his permission – and wanted to avoid being arrested for possible charges relating to the crash.

She pleaded guilty to causing wasteful employment of police time, aggravated vehicle taking, using a vehicle without insurance and failing to stop after an accident.

“She approached a residential property and made a report to people there that she had been attacked and raped,” prosecutor Katie Baker told Coventry Magistrates Court.

“Paramedics attended, and the defendant was noted as being extremely upset and hysterical.

“She told them she had gone from her mum’s house to the car to get cigarettes when two men approached her and demanded that she get into the vehicle. She described how she was dragged from the car and raped in an alleyway.

“She said she was dragged back into the vehicle where the collision took place. She said the men ran away and left her.”

She said the defendant said she was sorry for her actions and to the officers who dealt with her case, but: “A great deal of time, money and effort was spent.

“It had a big effect on the community, and this has a knock-on effect on victims of genuine rape.”

Hunter was released on unconditional bail and ordered to return to court for sentencing June 25.
