California teen falls to his death at B.C. bridge

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C.—A California teenager has died after plunging more than 30 metres from a platform at a North Vancouver tourist attraction.

Firefighters needed ropes and special gear to reach the teen after the incident at about 7 p.m. Sunday evening, but he was dead by the time help arrived.

RCMP are still trying to determine how the accident occurred at the Capilano suspension bridge, a narrow, 137-metre pedestrian link strung across the canyon, 70 metres above the Capilano River.

Investigators say the area where the teen fell is surrounded by a fence and dotted with signs warning of the steep cliffs ahead.

Insp. Davis Wendell says the victim was with a group of students and teachers believed to be on a graduation trip from a California high school.

He says dozens of students saw their friend fall and grief counsellors will visit the teens at their hotel to help them cope with what appears to be a tragic accident.

In 1999, a 17-month-old baby girl survived a 70-metre plunge from the bridge to a rocky ledge below.
