A BRITISH man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife and grown-up daughter at the family home.
Chris Rothwell, 57, called police today to say he had woken to find his wife Jean, 57 and daughter Rachel, 34, dead in the upstairs rooms of the family’s townhouse in Manchester, northern England, MENMedia.co.uk reported.
Rothwell, who was led away from the house in handcuffs, had undergone an operation for bowel cancer according to British newspaper the Daily Mail.
Police found no obvious signs of injury on the bodies and autopsies were due to take place later today.
Neighbours expressed their shock, insisting Rothwell was a “gentleman.”
Sociologist Dr Sorie Kujue, who lives next door said: “I don’t see this fitted his character at all. If he is the one who has committed this, it will be a shock to me. It will be out of line with his character as far as I know him.”
Another neighbor, Sarah Spence, 73, said: “He was so lovely. I can’t believe he would do anything like this. He hadn’t been well and was so feeble. I made him a cup of tea only last week.”
A Greater Manchester police spokesman said: “We are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
