A grandfather-of-two has described the terrifying moment a bullet flew by him as a hooded gunman opened fire across a busy Bristol street at lunchtime yesterday.
The gun-toting cyclist shot another man in the arm on Stapleton Road at about 1.15pm. Roger Smith, 65, was riding his moped along the inner-city road at the time.
“It really was terrifying,” said the visibly shaken retired firefighter from South Bristol. “I was riding along Stapleton Road and I saw a man ride out from Lansdown Road on his bike without stopping.
“As I passed the zebra crossing by Subway I heard several gun shots. I looked over my left shoulder. I heard a shot and somebody told me that a bullet had gone across the road and into a white van parked up by Subway.”
He added: “The man doing the shooting was on my right and the man he was shooting at was on my left. There were at least four shots in total.”
As the unknown gunman’s victim ran off, turning left onto Easton Way, Mr Smith saw the gunman give chase.
Mr Smith added: “I couldn’t see the gun at that point, but I don’t think he was about to render first aid. The man who’d been shot was a well-built black man. He had blood streaming from his right arm.”
It is believed the victim made his way to Felix Road. He was taken to hospital.
Avon and Somerset police’s firearms officers were dispatched to the scene immediately.
No one had been arrested by last night.
