A schoolboy has drowned as he tried to rescue his friend from a river.
Declan Shanley, 13, jumped into the river Kelvin in Glasgow to try to pull his friend out of the deeper water on Saturday night.
He was playing with a group of friends on the bank of the river, close to the West of Scotland Science Park, when one of the group fell in.
Declan and another boy jumped in to try and pull him out, but he was swept away by the current.
The other two boys managed to get back to the shore and call emergency services.
Declan was found nearly two hours later following an “extensive” search and rescue operation involving Strathclyde Police officers, the force’s helicopter and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.
He was taken by ambulance to the city’s Western Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a message of tribute, Declan’s family said he was “much loved” and a “best friend” to many.
On internet tribute site Gone Too Soon, they wrote: “He is at peace now. He was a much loved son, brother, cousin, nephew, grandson, and also a best friend to lots of people.
“He will be sadly missed, but in our hearts forever. Declan, we all love and miss you so much.”
