Baby clings to life as babysitter sought

Ronnie Munoz-Hernandez, 21, is described as a white, 5-11, 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

A baby boy lay clinging to life in hospital Thursday as police stepped up the hunt for his babysitter.

Homicide investigators have taken over the case, police said. They are looking for Ronnie Munoz-Hernandez, 21, who is not a Canadian citizen but lives in Toronto. He is not a blood relative to the baby, police said. What his connection is to the boy police would not say.

“We are urging him to contact a lawyer and turn himself in to police,” Const. Tony Vella told a news conference.

Details are sketchy but police said someone took the 5-month-old baby to the Hospital for Sick Children on Sunday with “serious injuries,” which doctors quickly determined were intentionally inflicted.

Only one person was with the baby at the time, police said.

Speaking to reporters, Det. Sgt. Colin Greenaway said the baby’s mother is with the child in hospital and faces no charges.

The assault took place Saturday or Sunday, police allege, in the Black Creek Dr. and Trethewey Dr. area of northwest Toronto.

Greenaway declined to say how the baby arrived at the hospital, with whom, and what his injuries are specifically. Police were called to the hospital on Sunday, he said.

Hernandez is wanted for aggravated assault, police said. He is described as white, 5-foot-11, 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
