Armed motorist shot after LAPD freeway chase

LOS ANGELES — A high-speed freeway chase has ended with the Los Angeles police shooting of the knife-wielding driver, shutting down northbound Highway 101 for hours in a nightmare for morning commuters in the San Fernando Valley.

Police detective Austine Villanueva says Hollenbeck Station officers in eastern Los Angeles tried to stop a vehicle at about 1:30 a.m. Monday and the driver refused, leading officers on a chase that ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a guard rail near Van Nuys Boulevard.

Villanueva says the motorist was holding a knife when he got out of the vehicle and he was shot by an officer. The wounded man was hospitalized, condition unknown.

Northbound freeway lanes are shut down with traffic backed up for miles at 5:30 a.m.
