$166, the price of a life, because of poverty

By Sandrea: MY GRIPE

There are going to be a great many people who will read the story of Jesusa Molle, the Bolivian woman who sold her new born baby for $166, and condemn her.

But, before people in the west condemn the woman we must first look at the circumstances surrounding this woman and her decision to do such a foolish thing.  Living in one of the poorest country in the world cannot be an easy thing to do, and although I do not agree with any kind of sale of an infant or adult, for that matter, I would rather read that she sold the child to a person who for some unknown reason is unable to bear a child of their own, than to have had the baby and either kill it or abandon the child.

I can imagine that we in the west, with our child benefit, child tax credit and all the trimmings that goes with having children that the state and hard working taxpayers has to foot the bill for, will be the first to want to condemn this woman.  However before you do so just give a thought to her plight, she unfortunately, do not have the luxury of a benefit system designed to allow her to constantly bear children without a care in the world knowing full well that irrespective of how many children she gave birth to they will be taken care of by the state, through the benefit system.

I empathise with her, although I cannot agree with the decision that she made.  I however believe the authority should be lenient with her, taking into consideration the unfortunate circumstances that she has found herself into. I do not believe she should be criminalised because in a moment of weakness she has made a very foolish decision. Let us give her some credit for accepting the fact that she could not care for the child, she could have, like many others do the unthinkable – KILL THE CHILD.
