U.S. soccer player, 12, dies after accident at Toronto pool

The 12-year-old boy who was found at the bottom of a hotel pool Friday has died.

Police confirmed the boy’s death Saturday afternoon, saying the boy passed away Saturday morning.

The unidentified boy’s death is the third drowning death in an unsupervised pool Toronto in the last four days.

The 12-year-old was in the pool with his soccer teammates at the time of the drowning.

The team is from the Mariners Football Club in New York. It is an organization for kids who couldn’t otherwise afford to play soccer, said their coach, who would only give his name as Rick.

“[The 12-year-old boy] initially had two left feet but I’ve been telling him to just hang in there,” the coach said of the boy, then in critical condition, choking back tears. “He’s been improving big time.”

The team from New York had just arrived at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Eglinton Ave. E., when some of the boys decided to go for a swim.

The 12-year-old and a 13-year-old boy were seen struggling in the water. Two other boys dove to the bottom of the pool to rescue the 12-year-old boy. When they got him on the pool deck, an adult began to perform CPR.

Police say that there were several adults watching the boys swim, but there was no hotel lifeguard on duty. Witnesses from the scene also said that some members of the 12-year-old’s family were nearby.

The 13-year-old boy was pulled to safety by an adult, who jumped into the pool. He did not suffer any injuries.

Earlier in the week, two 14-year-old boys drowned when they were swimming in a Scarborough apartment building’s pool.
