ROBERT F Kennedy Jr has filed for divorce from his wife of 16 years.
The divorce filing – on May 12 – came just three days before his wife Mary Kennedy was charged with drunken driving, suburban New York newspaper The Journal News said today.
Mary Kennedy was stopped outside a school near the couple’s home where she recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 per cent. The legal limit is 0.08 per cent.
Police were also called to the Kennedy home in Bedford, 77 kilometres north of New York City, on May 10 and 11 for separate incidents in which Mary Kennedy was said to be “intoxicated”, police records show.
Following the drunken driving offence Mary Kennedy was ordered to undergo alcohol abuse counselling. She will appear in court on July 22.
Kennedy Jr is an environmentalist at Pace University School of Law in White Plains. He is the son of former US Attorney General Robert F Kennedy, who was assassinated in California in 1968 during his run for president.
Kennedy Jr declined to comment to the Journal News about the proceedings, saying: “I’m not going to talk to you about my personal life.”
The couple has four children.
Kennedy Jr was previously married to Emily Ruth Black. They divorced in 1994, a month before he married Mary Kennedy.
