No reprieve for man who burnt girlfriend

A MAN who set his pregnant girlfriend on fire because “his brain went funny” has failed in a second attempt to have his sentence reduced.

Daniel Thomas Woodman was 27 years old when he threw methylated spirits onto the face and arms of his then-partner and set her alight in April 2008.

The pair had been in the river bed of Leichhardt River, in Mount Isa, when an argument broke out.  The woman tried to leave but Woodman threw methylated spirits from a bottle they had been drinking from and sparked a lighter.  She received extensive physical injuries from “shocking” burns to her arms, face, mouth and throat”.

The court had previously heard that when asked why he did it, Woodman replied: “I don’t know, I don’t know. My brain just went funny”.  Woodman pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm over the attack in the Mount Isa District Court in December 2008 and was sentenced to 11 years jail.  He also pleaded guilty to breaching a domestic violence order over a 2007 matter in which he bashed his partner’s face with a brick.

Woodman’s second application for leave to appeal against his sentence was unanimously dismissed by the Queensland Court of Appeal today.  Woodman had argued that his sentence was manifestly excessive and that his co-operation with authorities, early plea, youth, remorse and prospect of rehabilitation had not been recognised.

Denying the application, Justice Margaret White said nothing fresh had been raised.  “This court has already considered the grounds of appeal now advanced by the applicant,” she said.

“I would refuse the application for an extension of time.”
