A MOTHER has driven a minivan into the Hudson River north of New York City, killing herself and her three young children.
Newburgh fire Chief Michael Vatter said the woman drove off a boat ramp into the river at Newburgh on Tuesday night.
Emergency crews received a frantic call from a fourth child, a 10-year-old whom the mother apparently had let out of the vehicle just before it plunged into the river, MSNBC reported on its website.
Vatter said firefighters and police officers searched for the minivan for about an hour before finding it about 20m offshore, in about three metres of water, and pulling it ashore.
The woman and three children inside the van were all dead, Vatter said.
Police said the children were two boys, aged five and two, and an 11-month-old girl, the Hudson Valley Insider reported.
Police were investigating a domestic violence call made shortly before the incident, the Insider reported.
