Lawyer threatens to sue over Kartel’s detention

PALMER… detained after reporting to the police three Fridays ago

ENTERTAINER Adidjah Palmer, better known as Vybz Kartel, was still being held by the police up to last night, even though his lawyer said Security Minister Dwight Nelson had ordered his release from Thursday.

Attorney Valerie Neita-Robertson said Nelson had ordered the release of her client as the police had no reason to further detain him.

Last night, Neita-Robertson threatened legal action against the State to recover damages for continuing to keep Palmer in detention without charge.

“There shall be some heavy damages,” Neita-Robertson told the Observer late yesterday evening. “It’s like a pregnancy, it must happen,” she quipped.

Palmer’s case was not heard by the Emergency Powers Review Tribunal, which is hearing the cases of those held under the State of Public Emergency.

Neita-Robertson said she spoke with Nelson and that he told her that Palmer’s reputation was being damaged with the police’s failure to release him.

Said the lawyer: “They do not respect the authority of the minister. They do not respect the law and they are vindictive.”

The St Catherine South police, based in Greater Portmore, said they were awaiting the directive to release the entertainer.

Palmer was detained after reporting to the police three Fridays ago, three days after the constabulary named him and five other men in St Catherine South as major persons of interest.
