I can understand why the Schonrocks allowed their children to ride their bicycle to school rather than taking them in a car, there are already too much car on the street, and they are also trying to given their children a sense of independence which I have no problems with.
It is pure over-reaction that the Head believe the children were at risk, and one can only think that the horror of children that have been murder, that have been snatch off the street, albeit infrequent, is the reason for the Head reacting in that manner.
Back in the 80’s the vast majority of children from age 5, onwards would go to school by themselves, they knew the ‘green cross code’ and most parent had no fears in allowing children out by themselves. Since then the climate has changed and parents are petrified to allow their children out, even to play outside after 6pm, which is a sad state of affair, but unfortunately a few silly people has spoil it for the great majority.
I would hope that the steps that the Schonrock have taken will give more people the confidence to once again allow children to be able to go out on their own. We just have to teach our children about the potential dangers that exist.
The vast majority of people will never know what it felt like to lose a child to violence, and no one really can say who it will happen to, and because of that we cloak our children, the people who have lost their children to violence will be the first to say, cloak them, wrap them in wool, do everything to protect them, but unfortunately no matter how careful you are bad things happen.
