Vietnam jails 3 for trafficking women to China

HANOI, Vietnam—Three women in southern Vietnam have been sentenced to prison for trafficking women to China.

Presiding Judge Nguyen Van Tong says 29-year-old Nguyen Thi Thuy was convicted Wednesday of selling six women and sentenced to 10 years behind bars at a one-day trial in Tay Ninh province.
The judge said Thursday that Thuy’s two accomplices were sentenced to six years and five years in prison, respectively.
Thuy, who herself was sold to marry a Chinese man in 2009, was hired by a ring headed by a Vietnamese woman living in China.
Tong says the ring sold Vietnamese women to Chinese men for 32,000 Chinese yuan ($5,000) each, and that Thuy was paid 1,000 yuan ($155) for each woman she trafficked.
Thuy was caught in January this year with two women.
