UK MP arrested after sex assault claim

A BRITISH lawmaker was arrested overnight on suspicion of sexual assault.

Andrew Bridgen, a member of the Conservative Party, was arrested by police in the early hours before being released on bail, Sky News reported.

The 46-year-old lawmaker was questioned on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 29-year-old woman in the central London SW1 area, the same post code that is home to Westminster, where the British parliament is based.

Married Mr Bridgen, who is the MP for the central England constituency of Leicestershire North West, was bailed until mid-July.

“A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault against a 29-year-old woman at an address in SW1 in the early hours of this morning,” said a spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police.

A Conservative Party spokesman declined to confirm whether the lawmaker involved was a member of the party, saying only, “It is a matter for the police”.
