Tomas could reach Jamaica Wednesday as hurricane

TROPICAL Storm Tomas is forecast to become a category three hurricane with winds of 115 miles per hour by the time it reaches Jamaica on Wednesday, if it stays on its projected track.

Meantime, the Jamaica Meteorological Service forecast today that tropical waves will pass over Jamaica on Monday. Showers are forecast to continue tonight and over the weekend with thunderstorms lasting from tomorrow into Monday.

Tomas formed in the Atlantic today and is forecast to become a hurricane after passing over the Windward Islands on Saturday.

Grenada sent public workers home early and canceled evening activities including a concert by Jamaican artist Romain Virgo.

The United States National Hurricane Centre said Tomas was about 200 miles (320 kilometres) southeast of Barbados this afternoon. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Barbados, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago.
