MONTEGO BAY, St James — Publisher Lloyd B Smith, yesterday called for the reinstatement of the death penalty as hundreds of mourners paid their last respects to the herbalist Buckston Harrison who was murdered last month.

“No matter what a man’s proclivities, or lifestyle, we should not condone murder.

I am one of those persons who fully believe that when a man takes another person’s life in such a despicable fashion, his life should also be taken, and it is unfortunate that we still live in a country where our parliamentarians, our politicians continue to pussyfoot on the issue of hanging. There are perverts in this country who deserve to be hanged and those who killed Buckston Alexander Harrison have forfeited their lives,” said Smith, who is also Harrison’s cousin.

The bloody body of the bush doctor — who used to write weekly alternative health columns for the Observer West along with Swiss national Thomas Huber — was discovered at his home Monday, March 22 by his father, Winston. No one has yet been charged for the murder, and the police are still in search of Harrison’s mini-bus which was used to transport herbal products to his various markets across the island. The latest update from the police yesterday was that no suspects were in custody.

Smith remarked on this yesterday.

“Justice must be served and for too long too many people are killed and that is the end of the story. I appeal to those killers to find Jesus Christ and turn themselves in to the police because they have killed someone who had so much to contribute to this country, economically and otherwise… Any country that continues to kill its honest productive and dedicated citizens is in serious trouble,” he said.

However, the Reverend Rogelio Brathwaite, who officiated along with the Reverend Everton Jackson, prayed for the congregation to remmber that justice belonged to God.
