Pakistan court declines ruling on CIA case

LAHORE, Pakistan—A Pakistani high court has declined to rule on whether a detained CIA contractor arrested for shooting dead two Pakistanis has diplomatic immunity as the United States insists.

The Lahore High Court Monday instead said it was up to the trial court where the American man, Raymond Allen Davis, is currently on trial to decide.

It also said the government had not submitted its opinion on whether Davis had immunity, as was requested by the court.

The developments appear to reflect extreme reluctance on the part of the government and the courts to make a clear decision on the sensitive case.

Releasing the detained American would be unpopular among many Pakistanis and could destabilize the weak government further.
