A murderer who killed one of the country’s most notorious paedophiles while in a Cambridge prison has had his minimum jail term cut by 10 years.
Michael Peter Cain was in HMP Whitemoor when he murdered fellow inmate Leslie “Catweazle” Bailey in 1993. Bailey was serving a long sentence for sexually abusing and killing boys. High Court judge Mr Justice MacDuff ruled Cain must serve at least 15 years and that when the tariff expires this year he can apply for parole.
Paedophile gang
Cain, who had been serving life for a murder in 1987, and his co-accused, John Brooks, were jailed for life for Bailey’s murder in July 1995. Brooks’ tariff was reduced from 25 years to 17 years in 2008 and Mr Justice MacDuff said since he actually strangled Bailey, Cain was entitled to a shorter minimum term than his co-accused. Bailey was in jail for murdering seven-year-old Mark Tildesley in 1984, and the manslaughter of Jason Swift, who lived in an Islington children’s home, in 1992.
Mark was kidnapped from a fun fair in Wokingham, Berkshire, while Jason died at a flat in Hackney, east London. Bailey was part of a paedophile gang whose members included Sidney Cooke.
In his ruling on Cain’s case, Mr Justice MacDuff said he would only be freed once the parole board was convinced he poses no further danger to the public.
