Jamaican fugitive surrenders to US

A Jamaican fugitive wanted by the United States for a drug trafficking violation yesterday waived his legal rights to a formal extradition hearing and surrendered himself to the authorities.

Mark Antonio Clarke, a 34-year-old musician of Parks Road, St Andrew, signed the extradition documents and consented to be extradited when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court with his attorney Sandra Alcott.

Clarke, who had been indicted by a grand jury in Illinois, United States, in July 2008, is charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute a mixture or substances containing marijuana.

It is alleged that Clarke is a member of a drug trafficking organisation which operated in East St Louis and Illinois and during 2004 and 2008 routinely distributed large quantities of marijuana.

Clarke, who was living in the United States, fled to Jamaica in May 2008 and was arrested on Tuesday during an early morning police operation carried out by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team, Flying Squad and Mobile Reserve in Parks Road, St Andrew.
