Italy PM’s $47m spending spree

BANK records seized by prosecutors reveal that Silvio Berlusconi received $91 million from his holding companies last year and spent $47m, including $165,000 on ties.

The Italian Prime Minister faces trial next month for allegedly paying for sex with a 17-year-old belly-dancer known as “Ruby the Heart-Stealer”.

Prosecutors are studying his private bank account for payments to Ruby, whose real name is Kahrima El-Mahroug and other women who attended his alleged “bunga bunga” sex parties.

They say that he bought 100 diamond necklaces in a single order.

Details published by Corriere della Sera show a series of interest-free loans to 14 women, including $158,000 to Alessandra Sorcinelli, a former weather presenter, and $28,000 to the mother of Noemi Letizia, the lingerie model whose 18th birthday he attended.

That episode prompted his wife to sue for divorce.

Another $138,000 went to a contestant on the Italian version of the Big Brother and $23,000 to a female TV presenter who later ran for a seat in the European Parliament.

Mr Berlusconi attended a meeting of Italy’s Supreme Defence Council on Libya on Wednesday after face surgery to repair damage suffered when he was struck by a model of Milan Cathedral at a rally in 2009.
