Duke and Duchess of Cambridge delay honeymoon

NEWLYWEDS the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have delayed their honeymoon.

The second-in-line to the British throne is set to return to work next week as a search and rescue pilot.

The surprising development was announced by Clarence House today after Prince William and Catherine left Buckingham Palace by helicopter for an undisclosed location for the UK bank holiday weekend.

They are expected to travel to the Queen’s Balmoral Estate in Scotland, which will afford them privacy and stunning countryside in which to unwind.

Officials said the couple’s personal preference” was to have the break at another time and called on the media to respect their privacy following Friday’s spectacular royal wedding in London.

St James’s Palace said the location of their weekend together and the honeymoon “would not be disclosed”.

The decision to delay the honeymoon is a curious decision but it may allow for the excitement surrounding the young couple to cool down before their break.

The only other details provided were that the honeymoon will be overseas.

On departure, Catherine wore a belted short blue dress, with a cropped black jacket and black wedge heels, while Prince William was dressed in an open-necked white shirt, dark blazer and beige chinos.

The happy couple held hands as they strolled through the palace grounds, then shook hands with royal staff before leaving for the weekend.

The secrecy surrounding the couple’s honeymoon destination has led to intense speculation in the media.

Australia’s Lizard Island has emerged as a contender but they have plenty of options.

William has a deep affection for Africa, having proposed to Catherine in Kenya last October, so that has been mooted as a possible honeymoon spot.

Jordan has also been touted as a possibility in the press and would have nostalgic appeal for Kate as her family lived in the kingdom for two years when she was a child.

A secluded Caribbean island would allow the couple to escape the prying eyes of the media with Catherine having enjoyed many family holidays on the ultra-exclusive Mustique.

No matter what they decided, the honeymoon will be a litmus test of the married couple’s relationship with the voracious UK press.

William has been afforded a degree of privacy in the past by the media and is determined his new wife won’t be hounded like his mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales.

He is reported to still blame the media for the death of his mother, killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 as she was being pursued by photographers.

St James’s Palace said a letter to UK editors would be sent out asking that William and Catherine’s home on Anglesey not be identified by images or descriptions.

It added the couple won’t be spending this weekend at their home in north-west Wales.

Friday’s wedding was watched by an estimated worldwide audience of two billion with almost 25 million people watching in Britain alone.

The estimate puts the wedding in the top 10 of programs ever watched in Britain although more people watched England’s victorious 1966 World Cup final and Diana’s funeral in 1997.
