Britain’s Night Stalker jailed for life

A FORMER British taxi driver dubbed the “Night Stalker” has been jailed for life for a 17-year campaign of sexual assaults on elderly men and women.

Delroy Grant, 53, was told he will spend a minimum of 27 years behind bars as he was sentenced overnight for raping and sexually assaulting 18 men and women, although police fear the real number of victims could be as high as 500.

Judge Peter Rook told Grant he remained a “very dangerous man capable of committing heinous crimes and causing incalculable harm”.  He said he had considered giving Grant a whole-life sentence normally reserved for murderers and noted that his crimes were so serious they were not covered by normal sentencing guidelines.

“Your offending is in a league of its own,” he said, passing sentence at Woolwich Crown Court in south London.  The Metropolitan Police said it was “deeply sorry” after admitting it missed a chance to arrest Grant 12 years ago when his car was spotted at the scene of an attack and a detective called at his home.

Police admitted that a combination of mistakes by detectives, including confusing him with a different Delroy Grant, meant that instead of being arrested, Grant was eliminated as a suspect for the attacks.

The jury heard that between 1992 and 2009 the masked sexual predator broke into the homes of his victims and violated them in assaults which sometimes lasted several hours.
