Katie Piper, a former model injured in a brutal acid attack, has backed Labour’s plans for people to get the right to petition for CCTV cameras in their area.

She told a news conference her attackers could have escaped conviction if cameras had not captured close-up images of the assault in north London. Ms Piper had extensive surgery to reconstruct her face and appeared in a television documentary about her ordeal.
“I believe CCTV is an essential tool in today’s day and age in ensuring the safety of the public,” she said. “If you don’t have anything to hide, you don’t have anything to fear. Without CCTV my attackers could have walked free.”
She said the life sentences given to her attackers restored her faith in justice.
Home Secretary Alan Johnson said he would give people extra powers to call for cameras in crime hotspots. He accused the Conservatives of “running down Britain” by claiming society was “broken” and insisted crime had gone down. Ms Piper is the latest well-known figure to join the campaign trail.
On Wednesday, former EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella backed the Conservatives’ policy on knife crime.
