Guantanamo Bay an eyesore, will not prevent terrorism
As US President Barack Obama struggles to get Congress to agree to the closure of Guantanamo Bay detention center, one can only agree that this decision is long overdue.
Irrespective of the reasons behind the establishment of this archaic out-dated system the fact remains that its inception break every rule, in my opinion, that pertain to human rights violation. It was established because of fear following 9/11 and to date there is no really no justification for holding the individuals that are there.
I must agree with President Obama when he states that : “Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe. It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts US in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counterterrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed”.
It is a disgraceful indictment on our society when human beings get to a point where they would prefer death to living, as per the hunger strike current happening at Guantanamo Bay. These individuals are languishing in a detention center they are not charged with any criminal activities. No government or security service should have the right to just lock people away because we assume they have committed some crime of which there is no proof and if we allow Guantanamo Bay to continue it will not be long before the same thing will happen to every ordinary citizens whether it is in the US or any other country for that matter.
There is no doubt that society must and should protect itself from the fanatical aspects of our environment, those who are determined to cause mayhem and chaos within our communities, but we cannot and must not do so at the expense of human rights. We have a higher moral high ground in which we must operate and if an individual is alleged to commit a crime then we have the ability to prove their guilt or innocent via a court of law and if we decide that we are not going to go down that road we will just keep them lock up because in our narrow-minded belief we feel they are guilty of criminal acts then we are no better than those we set out to prevent from committing terrorist acts.
Let us hope that the US Congress will come to their senses and back President Obama with the closure of Guantanamo Bay, they need to realise that they cannot isolate their citizens any further around the world and so long as this eyesore remains then they are putting every American at risk from fanatics and Congress must understand that whilst they have safe haven in their ivory towers it is the ordinary US citizens life that they are gambling with and if another country hold their citizen in the same manner in which they are holding those at Guantanamo Bay they cannot condemn another country for the same security protocol or in my opinion, the blatant violation of human rights.
